7.5. FLAMMABILITY
Photoluminescent materials to be used as continuous wall or floor linings
should be minimum Class I II tested according to BS 476 Part 7 1987 (Surface
Spread of Flame).
8 CATEGORISING LEVEL OF RISK AREAS OF PREMISES FOR
THE PURPOSE OF EMERGENCY WAYFINNDING GUIDANCE SYSTEM DESIGN.
8.1. GENERAL
The purpose of a photoluminescent wayfinding guidance system is
to provide visual orientation cues in sudden darkness and to communicate
and provide continually supportive information concerning the location
and direction of escape paths.
The wayfinding guidance system should be designed as a function
of the difficulty and risk likely to be encountered by occupants in following
the escape path to the final exit. The system should be
designed by adapting the amount of material, the location and the luminance
properties as a function of the risk level and presence or not of other
emergency lighting provisions and in particular those provided
for by National or International Standards. The appropriate photoluminescent
wayfinding guidance system for particular areas of the occupied premises
should be agreed as part of the consultation process described in Section
3.0., and should be categorised according to the definitions and recommendations
of the risk levels described in 8.2. to 8.4.
8.2. LEVEL 1 RISK AREAS
These areas will be internally illuminated under normal conditions to
National and International Health and Safety at Work Standards and have
a substantial source of external light from windows or skylights. These
areas of the premises are normally occupied in daylight hours. Emergency
lighting according to National or International minimum requirements
is installed in most areas and is of the maintained (M) operation category.
A Level 1 risk area will cover those areas protected by battery operated
emergency lighting systems meeting National or International minimum
requirements where the photoluminescent wayfinding guidance system
will provide the necessary back up to the emergency lighting.
8.3. LEVEL 2 RISK AREAS
These areas will be internally illuminated under normal conditions according
to National or International minimum requirements but not benefiting from
a substantial source of external light or occupied regularly during darkness
hours. Emergency lighting according to National or International
minimum requirements is installed in most areas and is principally of
the non-maintained (NM) operation category.
