9.2.9.5. OPEN AREAS
In open areas the escape path should be delineated by parallel
lines each of minimum 40mm wide of Class 11 material and no greater than
2m apart. Alternatively the escape path should be highlighted with
one central line with a minimum width of 100mm of Class II material.
9.2.9.6. ADJACENT DOORWAYS, RECESSES OR
GAPS
Single doorways, leading immediately from and to the escape path
and on the side of the continuous low location lighting line, and recesses
or gaps of width along the escape path of no greater than 1m, may
either have no low location lighting line or should have their thresholds
marked by a minimum 40mm line of Class II material.
Double doorways, recesses or gaps of greater than 1 m standing immediately
from and to the escape path should have their thresholds marked
by minimum 40mm line of Class I 1 material. When present, the threshold
line should be joined to the continuous, unbroken wall or floor lines
on either side of the door, recess or gap.
Note: It is not advised to carry continuous lines across adjacent
doors and is considered ill-advised to place directional arrows
on doorways that do not form an integral part of the escape path.
Doors left open during an evacuation could be taken for the escape
path in darkness.
9.2.9.7. DEAD ENDS OR CHANGES OF DIRECTION
AROUND CORNERS
A line should be marked across the floor of minimum width as for adjacent
doorways and should be linked to the continuous lines on the floor or
walls.
9.2.9.8. STAIRS FORMING PART OF THE ESCAPE
PATH
Where possible, stairs should be marked on the walls on both sides with
no less than 50mm lines and preferably to fill the total area between
the string line, treads and risers to shape the stair outline. For escape
routes up stairs, photolumineseent material should be installed to
fill the risers. For escape routes down stairs, tread edges up
to a maximum of 25mm and/or stair noses should be marked with photoluminescent
material. In the case of continuous low location lighting lines
being wall mounted then the line should be continued down the stairs
at the same height above the string line. The line should change
gradient at the tread edge of the first and the last steps.
