This Code of Practice has been prepared under the direction of the Executive Committee of the Photoluminescent Safety Products Association and is the second edition of this standard. This Code of Practice deals with emergency wayfinding guidance systems produced by installing photoluminescent materials, safety signs and supplementary orientation cues and markers into those premises having emergency lighting as provided for by current National and International Standards. It is also intended here to supply provisions for areas in premises that are not equipped with emergency lighting to the above standards. The aim of this Code is to promote wider understanding of the types and characteristics of photoluminescent materials and products to be employed and to give guidance on their correct application to the varied requirements of different risk areas within premises. The recommendations given in this Code of Practice have been drawn up to encourage uniformity of application of photoluminescent systems designed to improve enhancement of the speed and orderliness of egress of persons in the event of interruption to the normal lighting. The recommendations form an important supplement to emergency lighting as provided for by current National and International Standards. The uniformity of application of such systems, in particular consistent incorporation and use of appropriate safety signing, is sought to ensure that familiarity and recognition of systems is, acquired by the general public. This Code of Practice of the Photoluminescent Safety Products Association does not specify when photoluminescent wayfinding guidance systems are required. However, it has been assumed that the execution of its provisions is entrusted to appropriately competent people for whose guidance it has been prepared. |
